10 Gory
Horror Movies You've Never Heard Of
10. Dead
Alive
Also
known in some areas as “Braindead”, This was one of the earlier
attempts by Peter Jackson, who you may know better as the director of
The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Often boasted as “the bloodiest
horror movie ever made”, it also contains some very bizarre
content, such as a creature called a Sumatran Rat Monkey. I have seen
many horror fans state that they want Peter Jackson back into the
horror movie fold, and I think this movie has a lot to do with that
argument. I don't want to spoil too much about what happens, but
there is a scene that involves some very extreme “landscaping”
work.
- Sleepaway Camp
A
typical story about a lovely young girl who is sent away to a remote
summer camp...where things quickly go awry! Campers start turning up
dead in some very grotesque (and creative) ways. It's a whodunnit
that is executed (ha!) in a way that makes it fairly obvious who is
causing the mayhem, but still manages to give the audience a unique
and very disturbing shock ending! There were a handful of sequels
made, but all of them fall short of the shock factor of the original
movie!
- Tromeo and Juliet
There
is nothing quite like one of the greatest love stories of all time
retold by the same grotesque company that brought you The Toxic
Avenger! One of the lesser known movies from Troma Films (who will
appear again later) adds a morbid take on the tale of the star
crossed lovers! I don't want to ruin any of the surprises, but if you
know Troma, William Shakespeare would have been disgustingly proud of
this work of art!
- Terror Firmer
Another
splatter fest from our wonderful friends at Troma! This one revolves
around a blind director making a film with a group of miscreants. One
of them is actually a killer who is causing the events of the movie
to play out in real life. Sometimes it's hard to tell what is part of
the movie and what is really happening, which makes for a fun, yet
macabre viewing experience! The shocking ending definitely caught me
off guard!
- Cannibal! The Musical
Written
by Matt Stone and Trey Parker before they became famous for writing a
little cartoon called South Park, this movie has a perfect blend of
gore and comedy. Based on the true story of Alfred Packer, it focuses
on a group of gold miners who get lost in the mountains and are
forced to eat each other to stay alive. This one may be difficult to
find a physical copy of, but a quick internet search should bring up
clips that are definitely worth watching!
- Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
Great
funny and gory tale about the stereotype of backwoods rednecks being
serial killers. Hint: they are not. Out of town teenagers succumb to
their own fears and get themselves into more trouble trying to escape
the harmless duo who are only trying to help them. In fact, the real
evil lies in one of their supposed friends who planned the entire
trip for his own sinister reasons.
- Stan Helsing
A
hapless video store clerk finds out he is a descendent of famous Van
Helsing clan and ends up on a wacky and grotesque adventure with a
group of friends disposing of modern day vampires, as well as other
famous movie monsters. One hell of a way to spend Halloween night for
this group of slackers.
- Return of the Living Dead 3
By
far my favorite of the series, though not one I hear many people talk
about. A tragic love story involving a young lady dying tragically,
being brought back to life by an experimental chemical, and
constantly needing to inflict severe pain on herself to curb her
appetite for brains. She manages to maintain her personality for most
of the movie, but when she finally loses it, it results in one of the
most grotesquely awesome scenes of self mutilation I have ever seen
in any movie!
- The Gate
A
rare gem from the 80's about a couple of kids who inadvertently open
a portal to Hell in their back yard by playing a record backward. The
creatures themselves are creepy enough and cause their fair share of
sick mayhem, but an eyeball appearing in the palm of one of the kid's
hands and his reaction to it, is the highlight of the gore, and
something I never expected to happen on my first viewing of this
film.
- The Hospital
Recently
released by Deviant Pictures, this is quickly becoming one of my all
time favorite movies! The level of gore and insanity is unlike
anything I have ever saw in any movie, past or present! It has an
appearance by Scott Tepperman of Ghost Hunters: International,
portraying himself. A couple of ghost hunters take a group of people
for an investigation in a supposedly haunted hospital. Little do they
know, the deranged caretaker Stanley has a woman held captive in the
building and is routinely torturing her. Things go awry when other
guests are also being captured and tortured in some of the most
inhumane ways possible! This is a must see for fans of extreme gore!
